Talking Just got the game

Hi all,

I just picked up GW:Factions, currently at work and once I get home will be installing to check it out. Got any advice for a total "Newb" to this game?

Thanks for any "good" advice

Installation includes a long (several hour) download. The CD just gives a portion of data file. The best thing to do for the initial download is to start it up and run it overnight - less frustrating.

On the other hand, GW is a great game. There are two wikis at the moment: first is the older guildwiki at http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page , second is the new Official guildwarswiki at http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

The older one is more complete, the newer is also available as in-game help by typing /wiki in the chat bar (opens a second internet window).

The max level is 20 which in Factions you should reach about the time you graduate from Shing Jea Island training. The rest of the game is level 20 content. This game is about obtaining and using skills, not leveling up. Once on the mainland, you can obtain max stat armor. After that higher priced armor is strictly for vanity.

Always glad to welcome a new player and forum member.

Welcome to GW!

Advice, it all starts with the class you choose. Some classes are more fun than others, depending on how you like to play your role-playing games. I'd recommend that you try out a couple different classes that interest you before settling down into a class.

There is a HUGE learning curve in the game. You might want to find a guild and then start doing some heavy research on guildwiki.org, probably the best resource on the web for new and veteran players.

Enjoy!

Hi, welcome aboard. GW is a great series that has kept me occupied for 2 years now, to the exclusion of almost everything else.

Since you're starting with Factions, you'll be presented with the fastest progression to level 20 (the max level) of the 3 campaigns. There are some who argue that it's too fast, in that it doesn't give you ample time to really familiarize yourself with the game mechanics.

If you do all the quests available to you on "noob" island (the initial area), you shouldn't have any problems reaching level 17-18 very comfortably (19 if you push hard and I believe 20 is actually possible, someone correct me on this if I'm wrong) before moving on to the mainland. Do all of the quests involved with choosing a secondary profession before deciding which one to pick (as opposed to trying just one 2nd which looks interesting, doing the associated quests and finallizing you pick, which cuts you off from all the XP you'd get from trying them all out). Doing all the 2nd quests will also give you a lot of basic skills for the various professions which will remain "unlocked" on your account, which will still be available to you if you decide later in the game to change your 2nd (when that becomes possible) and will be available to your heroes if you purchase Nightfall.

Once you get to the mainland, the content is geared to level 20. If you haven't quite made it to that, don't worry - there's a ton of new high-XP quests available when you get there, more than enough to get you topped off.

Take advantage of that!!! Otherwise you'll end up like too many people you'll see as you progress on the mainland - level 12-17s standing around mission outposts begging to get into groups that won't take them because they're not lvl 20s.

A good rule of thumb to judge own your progress is to look at the henchmen available in the towns and mission outposts. (Henchmen are NPCs that you can use to fill out your party if there's a shortage of real players to group with.) The level of the hench is an indication of the minimum level you yourself should be for activities in that area. IIRC, the hench progression is level 3 > 6 > 8 > 10 > 12 > 15 on noob island, and level 20 on the mainland.

So, relax, have fun and, if you have any questions, people here are only to willing to help out.

best bit of advice if you are a total newb is to choose either to play as...warrior,ranger,ele,nec...these are probably the least complicated professions to get used to...the others req. a bit of skill really and some in-game know how!

starting in Factions, not trying to be derogatory was a bit dumb!
Prophecies and NightFall in my opinion are better games for a newb to start in...thats just me...and a few other people I know ^^

if you do have any questions or would like some help (if Im not busy) im happy to come along and help you out!

my in-game-name is:- payne storm
<<<

I found that it only took me around 30-60mins to install the game...thats with my old really basic PC!

go ranger :P probably the most versatile profession...its up to you but you should probably go with one of the above listed professions that I listed

dont know if you already have this or not but...

www.guildwiki.org

all the help you will need with quests / missions / skills / guides / etc.

good luck and welcome to the GuildWars community!

Congratualtions! Guild wars FActions is my favorite GW game and was my first MMORPG (Free one that is)

-Have spent 2700 hrs on it 1yr so far and took a 4 month brk from game too (Hardcore gamer)

-my suggestions find a helpful guild who will train ya or just practice on ur own etc

-Invest some money in Signets of CApture as u can Capture Elite Moves off bosses if they correspond to ur Primary or Secondary Profession

Ex (Warrior/Ranger) 2 cap sigs = cap an elite off boss warrior or ranger...but they are usually lvl 20 and above

-Get great armor max for ur profession
Casters 60
Ranger 70
Warrior (TANK) 80 +20 vs melee etc
Assasin 70

-get great items

--meets some cool pple online

-TRy PvE Player v (Environment),PvP(player v Player), etc GvG (Guild v Guild)Ha (heroes ascent)

P.S. PvE is good for learning

HAVE FUN DEspite Anet's Faults there are too many reasons to LOVE guild wars ^_^ free online play etc
